Definition
Instruments that measure altitude using the change in air pressure with height, utilizing an aneroid as its sensitive element. Also, an electronic instrument used for determining the height of an aircraft above the earth's surface. Three basic types operate on the principles of: pulsed radar; continuous-wave radar; and measurement of variations in electrical potential between the aircraft and the surface.
