Definition
Embankments constructed to provide a transition from the natural stream channel or flood plain into and/or away from a channel constriction such as a bridge crossing. Also, embankments constructed to prevent lateral flow from scouring the corner of the downstream side of an approach embankment to a bridge as well as the bridge abutment. (Source: AASHTO Glossary)
