Levees (Pmhdm)

Definition
Earth embankments along a river to prevent inundation from flood waters; or a paved wharf sloping to the water. Also, embankments, generally landward of a top bank, that confine flow during highwater periods, thus preventing overflow into lowlands. Or, linear embankments outside a channel for containment of flow. Longer than a dike. (Source: AASHTO Glossary)
